What does a hot tub need from the electrician?

A dedicated circuit from the panel sized to the tub, a GFCI-protected spa panel disconnect within sight of the water, and bonding of the metal parts around it. The pool store delivers the tub; we make it safe to sit in. Pools add the pump, heater and lighting circuits and a bonding grid under the deck. Saunas are a heater circuit sized to the stove.

The part that matters

Wired before the water goes in

The right time to call is when the tub is ordered, not when it is sitting on the pad. We run the circuit and set the disconnect so the delivery crew can fill it the day it lands.

Why the disconnect is not optional

Water and electricity meet nowhere else in a house the way they do at a hot tub. The spa panel is a GFCI breaker in a weatherproof box, placed where you can see the tub from it, so the power can be cut without going inside. Inspectors look for it first. We place it to code and where it does not spoil the view.

Pools and saunas

A pool is several circuits: pump, heater, lights, and often an outlet for the cover. Under the deck there is a bonding grid that ties the metal and the water to the same potential. It is work that has to be done before the concrete is poured, so get us in early. A sauna is simpler: a heater circuit sized to the stove, run in the right wiring for the heat, with the control where the manufacturer puts it.

Questions

Hot Tubs, Pools & Saunas questions

Does a hot tub need its own circuit?
Yes. A dedicated 240 volt circuit sized to the tub, with a GFCI spa panel disconnect within sight of it.
Can my panel handle a hot tub?
Usually, but a full 100 amp panel may not. We check the service before we quote, the same as for an EV charger.
When should I call you?
When you order the tub. We can have the circuit and disconnect ready for delivery day.
Do you wire saunas?
Yes, indoor and outdoor barrel saunas. The heater circuit is sized to the stove.
Does it need a permit?
Yes. Hot tubs, pools and saunas are all permitted and inspected. We handle it.
